Venue: School of Public Health (UWC), Room 1A & B
Date: 19 Apr 2018
Time: 11:00 to 15:00

The Institute of Poverty Land and Agrarian Studies at the University of Western Cape, in partnership of Masifundise Development Trust invites you or a representative to a national roundtable discussion on “ The state of Small Scale Fisheries in South Africa.”

In 2012 a new Small-Scale Fisheries Policy was released; in 2014, the Marine Living Resources Act was amended to recognise the economic and social value of marginalised small-scale fishers in South Africa, and on 8 March 2016 the plan to roll out rights for small-scale fishers was signed by former President Zuma. It is now 2018, 23 years since the dawn of democracy and small-scale fishers are still waiting for rights to be allocated. The roundtable brings together fishers, fisher organisations, legal practitioners, academics, and officials to unpack and discuss the current state Small-Scale Fisheries, the implementation process, key challenges and joint strategies.
