A case study of working with members of a small farmer cooperative in the Northern Cape

by Sandra Kruger and Zaitun Rosenberg
(Sandra Kruger & Associates)
ABSTRACT

Eksteenskuil Farmers Association was converted into the Eksteenskuil Agricultural Cooperative (EAC) in 2007. The main objective of this conversion was to strengthen the organization and to have a legal entity that could raise capital and be more involved in the commercialization of the product, including marketing and value adding. The members of EAC produce raisins that are processed by SAD and sold to Traidcraft which is one of the oldest alternative traders selling Fairtrade products in the UK and European markets. Traidcraft uses EAC raisins for a variety of composite products including fruit bars, cakes and cookies. For almost 10 years EAC was the only Faitrade raisin producer in the world. This is changing.

Sandra Kruger & Associates has been working in various capacities with the farmers, management and staff of EAC, including a year-long skills program on record-keeping and communication; fund-raising for vineyard development and mentorship; and recently a land use and socio-economic survey.

Sandra Kruger and Zaitun Rosenberg will share their research experience with a team of local fieldworkers, some of the results which illustrate the challenges faced at different levels of the organization and the difference between large, medium, small and very small member farmers within the cooperative.
