National Programme on Coastal and Fisheries Co-management

Background
  • This programme seeks to provide support to initiatives and projects which are investigating and implementing community-government co-management arrangements in relation to coastal and fisheries resources.
  • It further seeks to promote active co-operation between such initiatives and provide facilitation, capacity building and other developmental support to such projects.

Aims
  • The aim is to inform policy, improve sustainable use and management of coastal resources, foster co-operation between communities and government agencies.
  • Additionally, it aims to provide empowerment and economic development opportunities to historically disadvantaged coastal communities.


Funding and Implementation
  • This project is funded under a joint Norwegian-South African bilateral co-operation agreement.
  • Moenieba Isaacs led the implementation of training in the Northern Cape.
  • The implementing agency is the Branch: Marine and Coastal Management, Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism.
  • The executing agencies are the Environmental Evaluation Unit (EEU), University of Cape Town and the Programme for Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS), UWC who have subcontracted aspects of the work to regional service providers, namely the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Wildlife, and Rhodes University (Eastern Cape).
