ABOUT THE PROJECT

PLAAS is carrying out an exciting and innovative new project on Securing Women's Access to Land in Southern Africa.  The 30 month project, funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and in collaboration with the International Land Coalition (ILC) and the Makerere Institute for Social Research (MISR), supports small grants for action research and a community of learning on gender and land rights.  At the heart of the project, are gender sensitive and participtory approaches to field work, policy and advocacy, that link research with action and support the capacity strengthening, learning and exchange of experiences between community based organizations at the grass-roots.

The the project held it's Inception Workshop in Nairobi, Kenya from 19 to 23 May 2008, and will soon launch small grants in four countries in the region.  Some of the initiatives of the project include:
  •  a email list serve on women's rights to land
  • a resource guide on gender and land rights (a living document that was initiated at the inception workshop)
  • country-based field trainings for small grant projects
  • a collaborative workshop on gender and decentralization in Southern Africa in early 2009 (co-organized with the "Decentralized Land Reform in Southern Africa - Land Reform from Below" project)
  • a regional policy round-table
  • peer-to-peer exchange visits for small grant projects, and
  • a final project workshop

Poverty and fisheries: Anything to learn from the Norwegian experience?
Norwegian development assistance has always been poverty oriented on paper, but with a weak understanding of strategies, entry points, interventions and the measuring of results. Norwegian input into fishing systems in developing countries have tended to use the same models applied in Norway.
