Laura Evans
- NRF Post-Doctoral Fellow: Land Reform, Food Systems and Agrarian Change in South Africa
Biography:
Laura Evans joined PLAAS in February 2011 as a member of the NRF-funded research group on Land Reform, Food Systems and Agrarian Change in South Africa. Laura was recently awarded a PhD from the University of Sheffield, UK. Drawing on extensive oral history fieldwork, the thesis explored the social history of resettlement into the Ciskei during the 1960s and 1970s and sought to delineate the range of different experiences that this process engendered. Themes of agrarian change, ‘de-agrarianisation’, gender and generational shifts that were examined in the thesis will be taken up further in new research that explores urban-rural links, agrarian change and non-agrarian livelihoods in part of the former Transkei (Matatiele). In addition, Laura is working to publish material from the thesis.
