Research Focus:

Communal land rights, land reform, large scale investments in communal areas

Nkanyiso Gumede joined PLAAS on 1 March 2016. He holds a Masters degree in Agriculture (Food Security); a Post-graduate Diploma in Information Studies; and a Bachelor of Science (Microbiology and Plant Pathology), all obtained at the University of KwaZulu-Natal

Before joining PLAAS, he worked as the Agricultural Science educator at Bizimali Secondary School in KwaZulu-Natal. He also had an opportunity to work, contractually, for LIMA Rural Development Foundation under the Abalimi Phambili Project as Agricultural Facilitator where he worked with small-scale and subsistence farmers assisting with inputs linkages, technical support and market linkages amongst other.

His research skills were honed when he engaged in a study, funded by Water Research Commission and UKZN, with a team of researchers at Limpopo Province investigating the dynamics under which rural women operate when accessing water for land-based livelihoods and empowerment for improved household food security.

His current research explores the impact of large-scale investments in communal areas.
