The origins of the Ingonyama Trust

How did 2,8 million hectares of land end up in a trust with the Zulu King as its sole trustee? After the April 1994 elections, the land administered by the other nine homelands came under the authority of the national government. Only KwaZulu was able to keep what the others lost—but how? The answer dates back to the tense last days before the 1994 elections, to reconstruct the informal negotiations that resulted in the Inkatha Freedom Party’s decision to join elections and the transfer of all KwaZulu land to the King. As many have long assumed, these events were connected, but the details remained elusive. Stationed on extensive interviews and archival research, the paper this seminar is based on, excavates the origins and purpose of the Ingonyama Trust.
