Join PLAAS for a webinar on “Fattening the curve–The bio-politics of food, livelihoods and Covid-19 in Kumasi (Ghana) and Cape Town (South Africa)” featuring Florian Kroll (DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security, Policy and Governance Programme and UWC-PLAAS PhD Student) and Dr Reginald Adjetey Annan (Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana).
The speakers will discuss the different forms and impacts of lockdown regimes in Cape Town, and Kumasi in the context of widespread co-morbidities driven by the intersection of poverty, food system transitions and obesogenic food environments. The conversation will explore the rationalities and contestations shaping the bio-politics of COVID-19 and metropolitan food security.
This talk is based on findings of the project: “Researching obesogenic food environments, its drivers and potential policy levers in South Africa and Ghana”, funded by the IDRC, and food policy research carried out under the auspices of the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security and the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS).
Questions for discussion include:
- What has been the impact of Covid-19 lockdown generally on food security/nutrition in the two cities?
- How does government response to the Covid-19 in the two cities adversely or favorably impact food and nutrition security vulnerabilities in the two cities?
- How does food insecurity impact Covid-19 vulnerability in the two cities?
- How are lockdown regulations likely to impact on food systems and food environments in the two cities? Whose interests are favoured and whose are disregarded?
