Biography

Risper Oteke is a trained Environmentalist from Makerere University in Uganda. She holds a Master of Science in Water Policy from Pan African University Institute of Water and Energy Sciences, Algeria and currently a Postgraduate Researcher at University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. She works as a Research Associate with Coastal and Marine Resources Development (COMRED), a non-
governmental organisation in Mombasa, Kenya.

Oteke has a strong inclination towards gender in regard to conservation. Her focus has been on gender dynamics in relation to climate change, marine resources access and sustainable livelihoods in coastal Kenya. Working with children and women in turning challenges into opportunities for resilient, ocean literate communities has been motivating as she provides capacity building and awareness on key ecosystems and species. Oteke’s current research is on the
peri urban mangroves of Mombasa “Seeing the ecosystem healthy and supporting
livelihoods and species within is my key desire for this urban creek. I am
working on it, progressively”.
